Will this size of wheel fit a mk4 ok ?. I reckon from looking at my standard 14X6 wheels that it would stick out of the arches slighty.
Am I right or wrong ?.

Yeah they're liable to stick out somewhat.
The ET is pretty low, but before I bought my wheels I did some researching on the matter (I thought I'd get this size too) and the results were fairly positive.
Some said the wheels could catch when lowered lots, but that's down to the hardness of the suspension and the level of drop you've got.
In short, no drop --> You'll be fine.
Big drop --> Get some stiff shocks or coilovers.
