lost me haynes

Post by Tahrey1043 »

its missing somewhere in the house in birmingham, or maybe at the bottom of my (pretty much shredded) tool bag in the boot... and im stuck in a flat in bournemouth

so, i need to ask questions of more knowledgable folk........

do i need to remove the inner wheel arch liner to replace the radio aerial? I never realised til i bought the thing how far down it went besides the "visible" extension (think: iceberg) and now fitting the replacement that's waiting behind the passenger seat is looking to be a bit of a mare

the compression ratio on a 1-litre is about 9.8 bar.... right?

and whats the overall coolant capacity? (just to make sure i've bought roughly the right amount of mix - seeing as the weather might be freezing on/off the next few days i've lost confidence in being able to change it and the 'stat unless there's a warm snap)

cheers :)

ps frosted morning after the car has been standing all through a snowfall and subsequent very slow melt (refreezing) - supreme starting/keep running troubles (turns over fine, has a bit of trouble catching, runs lumpy and then randomly cuts out at any speed/throttle setting under about 2000rpm until its had a couple minutes to warm)... more likely to be fuel condensation (my dads suggestion) or knackered gasket / rings (my fear) that dont start sealing until it's warmed up and things have expanded ??

Coolant is about 3.5 litres i think, 1 bottle of G12+ and top up with water will be fine for atleast -24 degrees according to the label (thanking you Andy for showing me that)

Yes, you do need to remove the inner arch to replace the wing mounted arial. Can't help with compression ratios. Coolant, 3.5l sounds about right.. I just buy a 1l bottle of coolant, put the lot in and top it up with water. Hasn't frozen solid yet ;)

Edit: Thinking about it, it might be a 2l bottle.. can't remember really. I'll check haynes for you in a minute.

Having replaced a wing arieal myself, the answer is yes. You do have to remove the plastic inner arch. Its held in place by (trying to remember here...) 8 bolts, they only have a small head, possibly 8mm or less. You will also need to remove the 2 'bungs' that attach the bumper to the inner arch as well.

Another bit of advice. If you cut the old arieal cable where it lies in the plenum chamber, remove the plug off the new arieal cable, and attach them together with a bit of tape, makes the whole job of threading it through a lot easier. I suggest removing the plug, as it gets stuck otherwise behind the dash close to where the speaker is. I suppose the other alternative would be leave the plug on, and try and fumble it behind the dash by reaching into the speaker appeture.

Karl.

That's me going back to GSF to return 2 bottles of unneccessary coolant then - told the numpty on the counter there's no way the car needed so much as it's a 1 litre, but of course, didn't have the book to prove it with so he flogged me three 1-litre bottles "to do a 50-50 mix with". Twerp. Was starting to feel bad about questioning everything the various blokes on the counter say, but not any more. (They've tried to sell me Quantum blue instead of synta for a mk3 - in winter! - etc..)

wonder if he even gave me the right aerial, now.. does look excessively large.

as for the fitting instructions --- ?!?!
i can sort of see what you're getting at, i just hope its easier than it sounds otherwise i'm off to halfords :D
demonstrably NEED decent radio reception, after the modest 2h 45 drive up from dads cooked my brother's tape adaptor!

Mk2 cooling system holds 6.5l with an external header tank.. I would imagine the mk3 system is pretty much the same, can't think of any major differences in where the coolant travels..

arrrgh *turns room upside down looking for manual* ...... gotta get that answer....

oh, wait

it'll be in the official vw manual as well.. which is right here in this drawer :D

Technical Data
> Capacities
> > Cooling System: about 5.6 litres

"about" 5.6 litres! Well... in that case... 2 and quarter litres of the antifreeze/anti-corrosion mix plus as much water on top as is required sounds ok to me... :)

mind you it also says the engine oil "with/without filter change" is 3.5 / 3.0 litres, which doesnt seem quite right from what i remember.

PS - windscreen washer, about 4.5, with headlight washers, 7.5 - think someone here will find that useful.
