my mate has just bought a 89 mk2 polo coupe s with 15 bbs wheels on it, pretty sure there the standard goof gti wheels. any way it is rubbing the arches really badly. apparently the car has been lowered 20mm on g40 springs, but they may just be cut down stock springs.
my question is can you get hold of just uprated dampeners because the car is really bouncy and i think it needs stiffening up allot so as to stop the rubbing. or do you need new springs too?. the rubbing happens in a straight line too when you brake hard.
if your m8s polo is bouncing around that much i would tell him to check his shocks cos mine used to bounce until i change them now its like its on tracks german swedish do the best shocks
If the springs are actually G40 springs then they should be ok on standard dampers, but definately make sure they're in good condition. If they're cut springs then get rid ASAP.
You may want to look into getting the arches rolled if the tyres are rubbing.. even if it is just because the suspension is a bit soggy atm, they'll still catch any time you go over a bump or have any kind of load in the car, and it's seriously bad for the tyres. You don't really want bits of tread flying off or the sidewalls blowing out at speed, not fun 15" wheels are always going to be a bit of a pain though, it's about the limit of what you can squeeze into the arches.
yeh the 15"s are preety big although if you spy this pic they have plently clerance....
doesnt rub driving along the flat or steering when driving sensibly, only rubs when braking hard and hitting bumps, but its proper shreading the sidewalls
thinking some gas shocks from eurocarparts would solve it maybe? that or maybe load the piston up with some bumpstops?
Those tyres are definately the wrong profile for your car mate! get some 40 or 45s and then deck it on proper 40 mm springs!
also the fact that the tyres are so meaty may be aking the ride bouncy!?
Yeah, those tyres are definately too big. If you don't want to modify the arches (which I'd really advise running 15's), you need a low profile tyre without too much width to it. Even if the tyres are only scrubbing over bumps and under braking, it's still quite dangerous.. think how much wear those sidewalls are taking
On another note, nice car Looks pretty mint. Out of interest, whereabouts are you? If you're around the herts/essex border you can't be far away from me

only down in stortford btw. i roll round in a 91 golf gti, 93 polo coupe (1.3) and a 71 bug,
mates just got this car and were trying to sort it on the cheap really. so just trying to stiffen it all up. tyres arnt really causing the body roll so think the shocks are proper shot. any body advise a good company for shocks? eurocarparts seem the only place i can find with gas ones.

you have the wrong size tires there tires that would fit a golf you need a smaller profile
example 175/70/13 from a golf would need changeing to 175/60
i have the above and they rubbed on the inner plasitc arch and on full lock it dont do it much now cos the plastics had warn away

Yeah, I know only too well how expensive tyres are.. but really, those are just too big for the car. If you're doing it on the cheap then check eBay for part worn tyres, if you're persistent enough you can find some barely used tyres for very little money.
GSF sell cheap shocks that seem to do the trick, sorted my front end roll no problem.. just got to get the back done now, I've had several friends commenting on how it looks like I'm driving a waterbed from behind As far as I know the G40 used the same length shocks as other mk3's so you shouldn't need to worry about getting shortened shocks or anything.
Yeah, my 185/60's rubbed pretty bad, and that was on 13" wheels, so it's definately too much on 14"s. I think really you're looking at 50 profile or below, and possibly go down to 175 or 165 section.
