15's with 195 45 tyres (not 50) go on 100% without mods. If you don't drop it on the floor right away it won't rub. [Any wheel/tyre combo will rub if the car is low enough]
Also:
195 40 16 is fine, it's the same effective size.
Remeber the ET btw, really low ET's make the wheel stick out and will make the tyre catch much quicker, even with 15's or 14's as the Germans prefer.
thanks karl, i take it i now need 4 195/40/16 tyres on the new rims i've got..it will have to wait i got to get through the rest of the month anyone want to swap 195/45/16 for 195/40/16's ???
iirc the mk4 and mk5 arches are about the same size and i use 195/45/15 bridgestones (slightly narrower than some) and exen at -11 cm i diont rub, ever not even on full lock
I think the 1997 and earlier models have slightly narrower arches, don't know why really but I've seen this confirmed a couple of times now.
My car can rub but it's very very rare (like a couple of times a year) and it could be down to the suspension getting softer. Stiff shocks makes for less rubbing.
if some one can host a vid then ill show you me coming out of my drive way thats got a u turn onto the street outside and the street is on a slant too!
