you're probably driving it much harder than you did before.

Even so thats quite a drop, I get about 100 to a quarter in the GTi, and that's driving it hard quite often!

there's a big difference between the 1st quarter of the tank on the gauge and the 3rd quarter. my first quarter takes over 100 miles to get through, the 3rd one takes about 40 LOL

Wow, really? Kinda makes sense actually. It always seems like Im in the 1st quarter of the tank for ages compared with the others. Useful!
Any idea why its like this in the first place?

Hmm, I need to check how mine's doing...not a 16V, but for some reason it's particularly thirsty

alrite Rich,

must say mine drinks alot too. i usually get about 240-260 miles from a full tank and i've recently serviced the car replacing all the filters and oil and it didn't make the MPG any better although it does run alot smoother. Might just be the cold weather 8)

driving styl;e makes a massive difference in the 16v. 70 constantly on the motorway gives 40 no probs, constant acceleration / deceleration around b roads gives about 25 mpg!

a lot of cars have inconsistent gauges - probably to do with where the fuel sender is mounted, and also I think the companies like to do it this way - so everyone goes "wow I have drived 100 miles and it's still on full"

the 8v I drive has the following rate:

full - 0 miles
3/4 tank - 160 miles
1/2 tank - 240 miles
1/4 tank - 320 miles
red - 340 miles

the 16v is similar, just knock about 40 miles off each reading!

I wish the GTi was like that it's more like

full - 0 miles
3/4 tank - 100 miles
1/2 tank - 170-180 miles
1/4 tank - not too sure miles
Light on - 280 miles

have u had an MOT recently?how was the car on emissions?

random high fuel consumption is usually down to a faulty lambda sensor
