My 1272cc Polo Formel E

Post by hypojam »

Hi Everyone, Just wanna ask a few questions about my Polo :D

I heard that the Formel E Engine is slightly different to other normal 1272cc polo engines:

"A high fuel efficiency model which did make production was Formal E (E for Economy), introduced in 1983. This used a high compression 1272 cc engine, longer gear ratios and an early stop-start ignition system (called 'SSA') that would cut the engine when idle for more than 2 seconds to save fuel whilst temporarily stopped in traffic, and re-start the engine on moving the gear lever to the left in neutral. The system could be disabled by means of a toggle switch below the light switch to enable the system."

Does this mean it generates more power compared to other standard 1272cc polo's, because its a High Compression Engine?

Also i hear from the previous owner that the top speed of this little car is well over a 100mph, Is this possible? I am unable to test myself because i dont have a license and the car isnt taxed or insured

Since being given the car well over 2 years ago  Ive gave it and oil and filter change, replaced the cam belt and readjusted the tappets. Now the car is in as best condition as economicaly possible

Any Advice or Comments Are Aprreciated.
Thanks

whats the engine code? its engraved on the block next to the timing cover. Is is HH, HK , GK????? then il be able to tell you..., as for top end i dare say you could reach rediculous speeds as the gears are so long- it would take all day to get there though :)

Is it more powerful?

Sort of, it has more BHP, but less torque than a standard 1272cc, as I understand it, could be wrong on that.

Top speed of >100mph. Quite possibly. Formel E's have very tall gearing, from what I've heard from other Formel E owners, it starts to sound strained at 80mph - In 3rd  The idea behind the high gearing is that you can be sat at low revs at pretty much any speed.

yeah 1.3 Formel E's are HK engines. They have better economy when compared to other cars that used the engine (polo CLs GLs and Coupe S's) because they had taller gears, but otherwise the engine is the same. (54bhp)

I love those economy gauges, Ive got one in my saloon now (As part of some mk1 golf GTI mfa clocks) Best economy seems to be at about 40mph in 5th, but it under-reads a bit cos its designed for a different car and engine.
