Is 71,000 miles good value on the original clutch?
I'm ordering the Sachs clutch on Monday/Tuesday from Euro Car Parts then

The line in bold is the correct clutch, yes? One other thing - I will need to get a new clutch cable whilst I'm at it. An OEM VW one will do nicely unless one of you guys tells me its included in the Sachs kit?

Have them just check the release leaver on the transmission whilst the clutch is out, see if its free and easy to move. I think that the whole problem with teh pedal boxes and excessively heavy clutches is down to this release mechanism being too stiff. You should be able to move it easy.

The clutch wont be any smoother, if anything having a new clutch i think will make it bite harder. you may need to raise the biting point of your existing one if you think it's not smooth enough. but depends on what you mean by smooth.
on my 16v there is a nut at the gearbox end of the clutch cable, you turn it clockwise to raise the bite and anticlockwise the lower the bite (or is it the other way around??) I have it as low as possible as I find it quicker to change gears. im not sure if it is the same on the gti, dont they have a hydraulic clutch?
im picking the car up later so I'll let you know how mine goes.

Had my clutch replaced yesterday, in the end the replacement clutch was a genuine VW item - the one that is effectively a reconditioned clutch with a new plate in it! Naturally a new clutch cable went in as well.
I thought that when I went back to pick up the car, the clutch action would be fairly similar to the old one, just lower down the pedal and a bit less stiff perhaps. How wrong was I! The guy who has done the work for me has done a sterling job
and the pedal is now silky smooth with no stiffness and no noise, and its a lot lighter!! When I first used it, I thought it wasn't connected up haha!
During the installation, all the cables and moving parts have been lubricated in an effort to keep the pedal action as smooth as possible. Makes a heck of a difference.
I had a look at the old clutch plate before I left, suffice to say it was indeed absolutely knackered, lots of wear and nasty marks and gouges across the surface of the plate
End result: I'm well chuffed. I know its not the Sachs clutch that was originally intended, but the job has been carried out so well I don't mind at all. I've never had such a light clutch in my Polo, its a joy!

hey i just had a new clutch and gear box and my car has only done 37k,which i think getting 70 is quality ,as i was 600 quid fro a brand new one.
