Dangerous Dave - What I was trying to point out is 40MPG in a GTI regardless of DSG or not is unrealistic. Yes I used Super Unleaded all the time (too be honest the only fuel I'd not use in again in the Golf would be Tesco 99 - it was the only Super Unleaded which caused a reduction in fuel economy - down to about 270-280Miles - I suspect this was caused by the Biofuel used to increase the Octane Rating). Yes they are very frugal for a highly performing Hot Hatch, but what you said the 2nd time round sounds a little more honest. I also read Evo, and the MPG was 30.7MPG, which is as I say lower than you're initial talk of 40MPG. When I sold my GTI I was honest with the lad that bought it from me. Yes if you travel longer distances it will make a difference, but not huge amounts. I'd say realisically 320 Miles from a Tank is good, if you managed more fantastic for you, but much more and I'd have to say your talking porkies. In any case I'm sure its not the only reason Toon is thinking of the Golf.
However coming from somebody who has already been through having debts to have the Golf its not worth doing. Yes its a great car, but I'd seriously advise going for the longer term approach and smaller debt. Also Mk5 Golf GTI prices are starting to sink, so if left a little while it might make them more affordable. Especially once the early cars start coming out of warranty.
Toon if you are definitely up for a brand new Golf GTI then I'd look into Imports - check out Tyresmoke.net, and check the Golf GTI section which is frequented by mostly MK5 owners.
Also as a price guide for a used Mk5, I sold my 5 Door Mk5 GTI DSG with 21K Miles for £16,400, this was an August 2005 05 Reg. The only reason it was quite this low was because the tyres needed replacing, and there were a few kerb marks (caused by the 1st owner) so realistically you'd be talking £17K if the tyres were spot on. Otherwise mine was spot on condition.
Hope this helps ;) (and Dangerous Dave - I hope there are no bad feeling ;) )

No bad feeling the bit that got me was you said I was talking rubbish and your following post saying I was more honest in my 2nd post. My original post like the 2nd post said my car averages 31-32mpg which it does on almost every single tank as does pretty much every one I've read about on the net. The comment following this was on a long trip it can hit high 30s low 40s which it does its done this on several long trips (we had a caravan up north for 6 months so went up a lot) easily past 430miles out a tank by sitting at a steady 60-70 on A/B roads in top gear, cruise set at 75 will net around 37-38mpg which I did on a couple of 800mile round trips downsouth hence why I went high 30s low 40s at no point did I say it gets 40mpg all the time but it is easily possible to get a GTI to do it by simply sitting at the speed limit on a long trip.

At least we both agree its a good car (as is the MK5 Polo GTI you have now)

To Toon fight harder on the trade in I got 4k for Dec 2000 X plate with 67k on the clock just under a year ago so I can't see why you shouldn't be able to get 4k for yours.

Thanks for all the comments guys.

I have actually done a deal on the Golf now (thanks to my dad revealing that he knew a guy within the particular dealer chain I visited ). I got almost 4k trade-in on the Polo, and a 6-disc CD changer fitted to the Golf for nothing. I would have no doubt got more if I had sold the Polo privately, but I took the offer as there was genuinely another person interested in the Golf.

I don't think it was too bad a deal on the Golf overall - £18.5k, May 2006 registered, 12k miles, steel grey metallic paint, standard interlagos cloth interior trim, manual gearbox, 18" alloys, Xenon headlights, cruise control, CD changer, elec. folding mirrors. With those options, the Golf would have cost almost £23k when new, so £4500 off after 1 year seems pretty good to me. I mean, I've seen other Golf GTI's of a similar age & mileage, with no options at all, advertised at around £19k!

I was cautious about the loan, but I have got a monthly rate I am very happy with. I may even be able to pay it off in 2 years if I save well and end the contract early (with no penalty charges, just a percentage of the remaining interest :D).

I have just stuck a deposit down on a Polo GTi (New) and i love both the golf and the polo but for the price difference is huge. I started looking around a month ago and found a nice one for around 13500 with no major upgrades, But i also asked a mate to keep an eye out for me as he works for VW and he found one with Electronic Climate control, rear parking sensors and cruise control for 12900. Which is a bonus, they are out there just check VW website twice a week.
