However coming from somebody who has already been through having debts to have the Golf its not worth doing. Yes its a great car, but I'd seriously advise going for the longer term approach and smaller debt. Also Mk5 Golf GTI prices are starting to sink, so if left a little while it might make them more affordable. Especially once the early cars start coming out of warranty.
Toon if you are definitely up for a brand new Golf GTI then I'd look into Imports - check out Tyresmoke.net, and check the Golf GTI section which is frequented by mostly MK5 owners.
Also as a price guide for a used Mk5, I sold my 5 Door Mk5 GTI DSG with 21K Miles for £16,400, this was an August 2005 05 Reg. The only reason it was quite this low was because the tyres needed replacing, and there were a few kerb marks (caused by the 1st owner) so realistically you'd be talking £17K if the tyres were spot on. Otherwise mine was spot on condition.
Hope this helps
