I've had mine about 5 months now and i stil love it! I also was tempted by the Zetec S but, at the most i've seen about 10 GTi's since I've had mine, think how many Zetec S's you see a day.
After an 02 GTI

A gti wont take as much abuse as a zetec s simple as !
if your a boy racer want something to thrash and rag and have a laugh in without worrying its gonna break dont but one cos it will cost you £$£$£$£$ and sleepless nights
but in my experiance the polo gti will blitz any zetec s in to the weeds without a sweat ( my bro had one zetec s is a slow car anyway) so its your choice
The gearbox tho be warned are the biggest pile of YOU KNOW WHAT .
get the cambelt rollers and water pump sorted and a full service history and a hpi check on the car.
if you can put up with its problems and be gentle with the gearbox and clutch theres not much for the money that can live with a gti on spec and looks its a mini r32 minus 2 pots and a V
unless you go french vts 106 gti / rally ,clio 172 /182 these do take abuse but they do fall apart inside and out too
try finding one thats had a gearbox recently and all the probs sorted do your research
i looked at six before i bought mine there are plenty about just find a good one tho
pitty you missed mine was a minter sold it never mind

cheers for the advise mate
No I'm not a boy racer unless I get some chav in a baseball cap and a saxo vtr driving up my arse
I only do 7,000 miles a year so any car I drive shouldn't get abuse.
it the standing starts that kill em the mid range is quite decent in the gti the chavs will have no chance mate
loved my gti only sold it cos i walk to work and ws sittin around wasting . There spot on cars like all vw's
have moved on to bikes for this summer if we get one !
just got my rocco to run about in its great fun not far off the pace of the polo but less than a 1/3 of the price lol
good luck in your decision ( have you thought upon a lupo gti 6 speed less probs ? )

anyone? also how do you tell if the pedalbox has been done?partridge88 wrote:I've looked at the Lupo but can't stand the bugeyed styling and they are too small for me.
BTW when test driving a mk5 gti, what are the signs that the gearbox and clutch are on there way out? how long do they usually last?

For the pedal box, there's usually either a sticker in the spare wheel well stamped by the dealer, or a stamp in the servive book.partridge88 wrote:anyone? also how do you tell if the pedalbox has been done?
Failing that, it should be on record so, any VW dealer should be able to confirm if it's been done from the registration number.
As for the gearbox, there's numerous different symptoms, I'd suggest searching as there's plenty of threads on it.
