German Plates

JPR: The font has to be exact, it is a font known as Charles Wright, named after it's designer. It has to be a form of this to conform. So a German font which looks about right is technically illegal.

Again, unless the reflective surface is BSAU145d it is a breach. It's all very technical, but there are specific measurements of retroreflectivity that are prescribed in the standard... all very dull, like most of Construction and Use!

David: I couldn't agree more. The current system needs a complete overhall, including a rethink on motorway speed limits. 70 really is an outdated limit in my opinion, and a graduated fine/point system maybe one idea, personally I am very much in favour of heavier punishment for speeding in built up residential areas, particularly around schools/community facilities.

And foreign drivers shouldn't be able to get away with it, but unless the government act and change the law to allow them to be subject to the same rebuke as British License holders there is little that can be done.

well I guess I'll keep my originals strapped in that little recess in the boot and try to talk my way out if I ever get stopped for it.
they do look pretty awesome though, as they look european due to them being pressed and the different font but I think what's throwing people off is the GB band and how proffesional the plates look

I've got the originals in the boot, all velcro-ed up and ready to switch should I need to.

Speeding in built up areas is pathetically antisocial. really annoys me.

urban streets that are not easily two lane should be heavily monitored and even 20mph in some cases. 30mph is too fast when you can't see ahead and children are out playing.

yet some people still speed along at 35-40 and don't care. I hate it down my own cul-de-sac, it's completely stupid.

main 30mph roads in and out of urban area I'm not bothered about, I usually do 30-35 in these myself and I'm no saint.

national speed limit areas definitely need a rethink. better guidelines are more CONSISTENT policing are the key. I'm sick of hearing people being let off for doing 90 etc etc, when we should all be punished the same way.

bloody hell, I forgot this was a german plate thread,

mr policeman, what would you do (or your colleagues) if you saw german plates on the road?

I cannot talk for any other officer, as the beauty of policing is that we are all individuals and will see things in a different light. The letter of the law is that it is an offence and the penalty is Â£30 non-endorsable fine, how I or any other officer dealt with it would be down to individual circumstances.

(For the record, this and any other posts I make/have made are entirely my own personal "off-duty" opinion and do not represent the view of any police force)

I don't think they will up the speed limit now. Not because of the increased speed, but these days more so because of CO2 emissions

I got stopped - and give a slip to take to an MOT station with UK plates. My mates an MOT tester - he stamped it blah blah

Other day , stopped - same guy hes like i told u to get them off 3 months ago, im not giving u another MOT thing so i said ok , thinking 30 quid fine - but nah he says ill send a report to the prosecator dude , then sent me on my way....

wtf does that mean lol

I've just ordered plain pressed plates (no germans bands etc) but spaced wrong. Will run with standards in the boot though

Have you got a private plate?

If so then you can be reported to the DVLA for misrepresenting the plate etc, I was warned about this last time I got stopped for mine, although they took photos of it and told me if it was seen again they'd report me to the DVLA.

From my training number plate offences cannot be dealt with by way of VDRS (Vehicle Defect Rectification Scheme), so that is odd, but as you are north of t'border it may be different, English Law is different from Scottish.

What the cop will do is report you to the Procurator Fiscal (sp?) which is the Scottish version of the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service), so effectively you will be summonsed to court to answer the offence, obviously courts will be able to levy a heavier fine than a fixed penalty notice.

I had a VDRS the first time I was stopped for mine, so basically 14 days to change it and take it to an approved MOT Test Station.

Yes i have a private plate on the polo n33ll f.

I was summoned when i had no MOT the same way , few months later i got a letter pay 60 quid or take it to court - i paid 60 quid. I guess they will do the same again .. or sumit similair - pay a fine or go to court.

As its a private plate - i guess they can take it from me - but then i could just buy it back??

The polis can send photos of your numberplate to the DVLA who can then withdraw it from you, and i believe issue your car with a Q plate, which would mean that it could not have a private plate issued to it in the future. As to whether you can buy the plate back I do not know.

I should imagine they wouldn't let you as it kind of defeats the object.

They'd no doubt re-sell it to someone else.
