misfire on 1 cylinder=fresh fuel getting spilled into very hot catalytic converter = instant destruction!!
as soon as you get any kind of misfire on an engine with a catalytic converter, you should try and avoid driving it, and if necessary, DO NOT THRASH IT!!!! (thats what I did on my 1.2 polo coz I was SOOO ANGRY and ended up with a near £500 bill!!
I think he'd have noticed if it was firing on 3, but you never know

I thought that the engine controller knew when a coil failed and disabled that cylinder's injector so that the cat was not destroyed - but I do agree that driving with this light on is not advisable - even if its a coil failure as the engine would be unbalanced and would get unnecessary stress - unless of course you were in an awkward situation and could not stop or leave the car for reasons of personal safety. You've just got to look at the complete picture and make the best decision.

LOL not firing on 3.. that's what it's supposed to do!!
Mine was firing on 2  but it was an end cylinder that was out so it didn't unbalance the engine too much! Should have seen the state of it when the middle one went! I thought the engine was going to leap out of the engine bay on idle!!!
