Might be a faulty cam position sensor...

Hopefully nothing more serious than that.

camshaft sensor mate like josh said!

they play up from time 2 time! delete the fault code and reset the readness codes and chances are it wont reapear!
If it does your can scope the camshaft sensor 2 check its operation and replace if nessary!

Now that I've had chance to think about it, I had this fault once on my GTi...

I was on my way to work one morning and the Check Engine light came on and the car went into limp mode.

I turned the engine off and on again and the car ran fine. Deleted the fault code when I got home and it never happened again.

Cheers

well there is 2 sensors on the rocker cover, and ive always wondered which was indeed responsible for this error code

I found this might be helpful

Image
1. Fuel Injector
2. Hall Sender (sometimes call CIS- Cylinder Indentifyer Sensor, or Cam Position Sensor)
3. Throttle Body, contains throttle postision sender, idle switch + more
4. Coilpack- sometimes called DIS or distributorless ignition system
5. EGR Valve Actuator Solenoid, the actuall valve is underneath on the exhaust manifold
6. Thermostat Housing
7. Wiring Plug for Lambda Probe
8. -Underneath Hose- Wiring plug for Knock sensor
9. wiring plug for Speed Sender- sometimes called CAS or Crank Angle Sensor
10. Coolant Temperature Sensor - or CTS
11. Oil Pressure Switch
12. Fuel Rail
