288mm brakes behind a 15" wheel?

Post by K.I.T.T. »

Like the title says, does anyone know whether 288mm brakes would fit behing the standard 15" sport alloys? I know that 312mm fit (just) behind 16" wheels. My brakes were 50% worn around Christmas and will probably need doing late this year / early next year. If hey fit, it gives me a bit of time to save up and hunt for parts. Callipers / carriers / pads and discs are easy to come across and can be had for not too much...just need to find some hubs.

And in case Sandy (RITCHAT) sees this, how hard is it to swap over and is there anything else needed? Bear in mind I've never personally attempted anything as mundane as a brake pad change on my own. I can do a basic oil change, and that's about it

They should fit, totally depends what alloys they are though. I know bbs rxii 16" dont fit over 312mm but standard vrs alloys have about 4mm space..

Thanks for the pointer...I'd probably swap over to 312mm eventually and the RXiis were on my shopping list. Not anymore!

RXIIs do fit over a 312 brake. You just have to shave something off the caliper.

Some1 on here did it. Its a tight squeeze but it can be done.

Hi Ash

I had to change the hub carrier when I upgraded so that the calipers would be fitted correctly however I was in the fortunate position that the doner car they came from was bulk striped and all I had to was change over the halve shafts and connect everything rather than spliting everything up and installing individually.

It would depend on what you have planned for your car whether or not to go the full monty for the 312 mm.This would mean you will need 16 " alloys(5) of which I have a spare set no tyres though and they were on the car originally before all the upgrades. Pictures on the other polo forum. Clubpolo.

I don't want to sound daft here but you will need brakefluid, a brake bleeding kit, a socket set. a thin sided deep socket 36mm to get the hub nut off. These you need to replace with new ones from VW as one use only. a basic set of spanners ideally ring ended for the bleed nipple on the calipers. Discs Pads Disc retaining screws these may be ok if the ones on your car aren't goosed again can get them from vw. A haynes manual for the torque settings.

You will notice the difference in the braking the first time you try it out and if you need to stop quickly once things have bedded in.
Its a shame you don't stay close to Glasgow as I would be happy to help out.
