1.4TDi Fuel Filter Change

What's the correct procedure for changing the fuel filter in the above car????

Step 1.
Right, there are 4 fuel lines that appear to connect to the fuel filter. Two of these aren't actually connected to the filter - this is the fuel return line. You'll know it when you look, best described as a fuel line split in the middle with a check valve in between. Unclip that from the fuel filter and leave it alone. Remove the other two fule lines from the filter noting orientation. Then just pull the filter upwards to remove. Put the new filter in and reconnect the two fuel lines you removed and re-clip the fuel return line.

Step 2.
Now, try starting the car. It should start and then die after a couple of seconds. That's because the fuel filter isn't primed and the car has used whatever fuel was left in the lines. Turn over the car for about 10 seconds and stop. Keep on turning over until it starts, it usually takes 2 - 3 goes before the fuel filter is primed from the lift pump. The car might be lumpy for a few seconds and will then settle down. Then check that the fuel lines are securely connected and no fuel is leaking.

Step 3.
Have a beer

Is the system non self prime then kitt if u just turn ignition on and then off again

It'll take you forever if you keep cycling the ignition and just try priming using the lift pump. The secondary fuel pump assists this process if you actually turn the engine over.

Fair enough. Just wondered cos bloke at vw how serviced my car didn't turn it over just primed it using ignition bout 6 or 7 times I watch them at vw make sure they do the car properly and change what i tell them to

I'm not entirely sure if there's any reason to use one method as opposed to another tbh, but I always turn the engine over. I did try doing it using just the lift pump once but it took forever by which time I got fed up and just turned it over Maybe the lift pump was on it's way out?

It's that simple?!? I thought I would have had to depressurise the system at least????

Just be careful when you're disconnecting the fuel lines as there'll still be diesel in there. Ask my friend who I fooled into removing the lines without telling him what they were and consequently got diesel all over his shirt
