ABS Query

Post by dantheram »

I thought i had finally mended everything on my car (except my bootlight  )

However, i was driving to work today and felt my ABS come on for no reason, shortly after the ABS light made its appearence!

I stopped the car and turned off the engine, this cleared the light until i braked again, at which point i hear grinding and other strange noises accompanying the ABS, shortly after, ABS light!

Can anyone suggest possible causes, it seems like the ABS comes on for no reason leading to the light on the dash.

Mightve flicked a stone into the brake disc. Would make ABS flip out if it got jammed.

This is very strange now.

Drove to work again which is around 13 miles, firstt noise appeared about 7 miles in and was grinding and a kind of monotone ticking that is constant for 5 or so seconds, after this, sometimes, when the breaks are applied i get a crunch and the abs feels like its activating.

However, today i have recieved no abs light, meaning the problem must lie elsewhere and is having an occassional effect on the abs.

Could it be the drive shaft? :?: :?:

ok, i got my copy of vagcom and pulled 2 codes off the abs

- 000287 04-10 intermittent malfunction (full version required for details) any ideas??

- 000287 16-10 right rear speed sensor signal outside spec.

and 1 code off the xenons

- 01539 35-00-- headlights not adjusted

Can someone help with the one where i have no details other than malfunction, does 04-10 mean anything?

Took the affected wheel off earlier to find that someone had destroyed the connector (wire back to abs module end) and cut the wire back to install two spade connectors, then sealing the arrangement with tape.

I took it apart cleaned it out throughly and replaced the setup, abs light is out and all seems well, although i bet it wont last.

Is there anything i can do to make this connection more robust in the future? what can i seal the wire with, which is more effective than tape? :?:

Use those heat-shrink connectors that go over wires? Should offer better protection against corrosion, and just a dab of some good quality contact cleaner on those spades should do the trick I reckon.. :)
