I was told by one of the guys at work when i rebuilt my box that engaging 3rd before reverse lined the tranny up properly. he showed me why with the box split and it made sense so i do it all the time.... with no issues. Selecting reverse is the worst when its cold, I used to go through the gears first before selecting reverse because it never liked going in first time.
2nd gear is a little iffy on the syncro when my box is cold so i always let her warm up and try not to use it when cold by jumping straight to 3rd if possible. I always find that double de clutching down the box is good when possible to minimise wear on syncros.
The issue with my box was the 5th gear bearing had cast its needle rollers through the box
