How much would you say that weighs? And I notice a few tell-tale signs that suggest it was originally a 9n which has now had a 9n3 front end swap - hence the bonnet strut ;). 9n3s never had them. Sure you'd be able to retrofit one from a 9n - should be bolt on.

good spot with the face lift, origionally a 2004 but the rules in our championship sort of went along the lines of you can only use engines upto year of your car, so with the facelift it brought it upto 2009 so released a few more engines to choose from, i looked at putting the same engine as my road car engine in, an Edition 30, but it got a bit complicated and i needed to keep it fairly simple, in the end we went 1.8t. Weight wise it's about 1100kg mark, like i say still a bit heavy for the power side of things. At the moment the plan is to get the power back upto where it was with the N/A engine, 210bhp so it would need to be that weight anyway.

What engine was in it originally? Mercato blue...love that colour. I remember you making a few posts when it still had the NA engine in. Was it a tricked up 20v unit by any chance or was it a 16v unit? Care to share any specs? Was there such a significant difference between the weight of the engines?

And 1100kg does seem to be on the slightly lardy side - would have imagined it to be closer to the 1000kg mark with it being stripped out like that. I take it racing's not what you do for a day job (or is it?). Any tips for someone looking to get into the sport? Been contemplating on getting an old Porsche 924S to do some track work with, but there's still a lot I need to learn. Need to know about licences and how much it costs per season / race in consumables.

Sorry for the slight hijack and for so many questions - I've always had an interest in your car. I'm in Leicester quite often which isn't too far from yourself. Would there be any chance I could come over and say hi and maybe have a look.round the car I'm next in the area?

Ash, should have said car weight is 1045kg, car origionally ran upto the 210bhp class which is 1082kilos after a race with driver and fuel. At the moment with 180hp it could come down to 945kgs. But as we plan to get the power back up it will stay where it is for now. The origional engine was the N/A 2.0ltr 20v which gave us 210hp and 222Nm at 5246 revs. This gave a few problems in itself as there was nothing at the bottom end, it was great at speed and on the brakes, but out of a slower corner everyone got back past. This lead to different things being looked at including different final drive ratios, different boxes, but always said the current box was a really good close ratio set up. Problem was in South Africa they used a 13" wheel and standard brakes which gave it good exceleration but in the VW Cup the smallest tyre was a 16". So it was loosing out big time. When the 1st engine went bang the spare was made a bit stronger, J.E Pistons went in as the spare set were the same as the 1st set which was the culprit for the engine breaking, cracks in the piston skirts lead to a failure resulting in a hole both sides of the block and a nice big fire. Having spoken to VWR in South Africa they told me they had swapped all their pistons for a different make and turned there rev limiters down to 7200!! Problem 1, i couldnt even get to 6000 rpm. Theres a slight weight increase between engines as this current one has the turbo side of things going on plus intercooler, pipework etc. This is not a bad thing as it always struggled a bit with a lack of weight over the front end for getting the power down. The official day job is race instructor at Silverstone, so in car but not always driving!! answering your question about costs etc......STAY AWAY FROM RACING!! no not really, it does drink money sometimes, and time. Depending which championship you go for also makes a difference, i did TOCA package with the Clio's and even before the season started i had to hand over £10k to register. Weigh in £150+ a tyre, fuel for a quali and two races, where do you stay, not to mention parts, and the weekend can cost a lot. Even in the VW cup, i dont have a budget like the others so my tyres may (do) have to work for two meetings, (4 races) whereas others will chuck 4 on for qualifying, another 2 for race one maybe another 2 for race two.

Currently the box is out about to be rebuilt as it had a broken needle bearing plus a split thrust washer, again looking at making this a bit stronger too, it does take a bashing but stands up well. Only ever had one problem with this box, i broke a couple of synchros once, but these are the standard brass ones designed for road use. By all means if you are any where close give us a heads up and i can see if i'm around, pop in for a cuppa. If you like i will PM you an email address and save clogging up here, (i got told off once ;-0 ) and if you need to know anything (i might know the answer) fire a mail across.

Which KW's did you have on before the GAZ's? I'm interested as I'm looking to get a fast road/track day set up so I'm assessing my options lol

i drive simply the KW V1 set up and it works verry well as i never have to back down for nobody around a corner
but it's nothing compared to the set up he drives obviously
but i do know Billstein coilovers are verry good also, about the same price as KW's also

I'm going for the KW club sports with top mounts :) try are expensive but they were designed on the track for road/track use so they have many things to adjust for if your on the road and then want to change for the track. They also have stiffer springs than the version 1's so it's safer to go lower :)
