So I’ve got a 2003 VW Polo 1.2 E and I’m loving it so far, I only wish it had a bit more power so I’m thinking of having the engine swapped out in favour of a bigger, more powerful unit. Could anyone give me some advice on which engines would be a good fit? I’ve been looking at the AUM engines from the MK4 Golf GTI and also the 1.8T engines from the Polo GTI.
Any help would be appreciated!!

Unfortunately there tends to be a common reply on these forums to anyone posting on this topic, that reply is "forget it" save up for a Polo with a bigger engine fitted at factory. The reasons given include, difficult to insure as it will never be a GTI etc, cost of changing fuel system and piping, ECU and cableforms, brakes and suspension. It will always be a mongrel as even the basic body will be slightly different for the bigger engined cars It might sound like a great project, but for all the money will be spend, add that to what you have and you should be able to get something better that started life as a GTI etc.
This advice might sound like sour grapes, but I've been there and almost spent the money - and that was over 30 years ago, luckily for me reality cut in and I held on to the money and bought a far better/faster car, so I've no regrets on that count.
There is always Ibizas around with bigger engines for less money than a GTI Polo will cost, maybe think about that as a "halfway" car until you can afford a better VW.
