Sunroof drains

Ok have finally got round to looking at the sunroof leak,the damp was only on the drivers side - on my car the rear drain is routed straight back along the roof and exits through a silly rubber bung near the top tailgate hinge,I partly removed the headlining and checked the pipe run etc - looked ok to the rear but I sealed both ends on with some goo before refitting.
Today I partially removed the front of the headlining and checked that the front pipe was secure (it is!) - so I then squirted some water down both side front drains and on the nearside the water came out at the mudguard - nothing at all came out of the offside.I then did a comparison visual check - on the nearside in between the door hinges the drain hose exits out of the side of the car and goes down to the mudguard.On the offside there is no pipe and the rubber bung appears to have been capped off LOL
I am assuming both sides should be similar
Does anybody have a part number for the bung and lower drain pipe please ?

I never had any problems with my 2000MY Passat or wife's 2003MY Polo both with electric sunroofs, but, as far as the Passat was concerned, there were four drain pipes, the two fronts coming out at the bottom of the door pillar so you could squeeze/check the "valve" at the end to make sure it was clear, and the two rears coming out behind the rear wheels, again (maybe) the "valves" were visible from under the car. Polo, I can't remember but they must have been very similar.

Try to find an on-line VAG part listing, failing that, and even if you do find that , a trip to your local VW dealer's parts area will clear things up part number wise and they can order the pipes and "valves in for you.

Ah, I've looked on the on-line parts listing and find that as you have done that Polo only gets a front and rear pipe drain on one side! ( http://etka.cc/ )

So, I'd reckon that as long as you have cleared these two drains and sealed them correctly at the top end, any water that gathers in the sunroof tray should drain away without wetting the roof lining.

Thanks for that link Rum - a very useful website.
The whole thing does not make any sense - the sunroof has 4 drain holes (1 in each corner as expected) it has a drain pipe down the offside A pillar - so one would expect that drain pipe to go somewhere LOL.
The detail for the rear pipe is a bit misleading - as the pipe routes straight along the roof.
Will have to dig some more - thanks for the help as usual

So, maybe consider modifying your car to have pipes on both sides leading down to the correct points low down in the wheel wells, I'd expect pipes for one side to be same for pipes on other side. If you are in any doubt, look up the part numbers for what is fitted to the 2000 Passat saloon, or maybe even the Golf of the same age?

Edit:- I still think that the point at which you have found the rear drain emerging sounds a bit silly, I just wish that I had looked a bit more at wife's previous Polo - but probably like you, if it is not causing trouble then why bother?

I wonder if someone has pushed a flexible rod down all these 4-off drain points to make sure they are clear, and broken the closed off ends on the side without pipes?

Another Edit:- I remember now that in the Passat saloon, you could see the rear drain pipes as they were inside the car and running down the areas at each corner - my car was a personal import so was not fitted with a rear mounted CD Multi player - so that area was left open with just the plastic mounting frame.

Next dry day I will remove the trim panel just fwd of the bonnet release and see where the A pillar drain is routed to,AFAIK all cars with a sunroof have 4 drains to cope with being parked on slopes etc,good job I taped up the sunroof again when I finished looking at it the other day
I had heard that some cars only had rear drains fitted but this is not the case with our car,even having 3 drains would not cope with being parked on a right hand slope with the front of the car facing slightly downhill !

I'd think that the front drain pipe will go down there, or down the windscreen pillar and out into the rear of the wheel arch area behind the wheel arch liner. One thing that I learned about taking off a wheel arch liner (securing screws) is, that all these screws are screwed into plastic/nylon retained "nuts" that fit into square holes punched in the wheel body/wing area, now these plastic "retainers/nuts" harden with age and as the screws that run through them get rusted up, when we remove them you do tend to split them - so reuse is not a possibility in most cases, I got round that by buying some retainers before ever taking these sort of screws out.
