Hello OomStu_ZA ,

Please do let us know what the factory says the grade of oil they use in the manufacturing of the car. As per my earlier posts, few dealers I spoke to in UK
seems to contradict VW UK confirmation 0w-20 oil to use. None of them have ever used this grade of oil !! Incidentlly, my car is set for fixed 12 months service.
I also have VW two year service contract which I paid at the time of delivery

When the car is put on a fixed (1 year) maintainance interval, 5W40 or 5W30 is ok. When on a variable (2 years) interval, it's 0W20

I'm sorry I don't follow the statement above. My vehicle is serviced every 15 000 KM's as stipulated by VW SA and has a motor plan to 100 000 KM's. They never offered a choice of "service type" when purchasing the vehicle. I also avg. 35 to 40 000 KM's p/a meaning there quite a few services in a year for my car.

In certain sales territories VW Group offer to set the car up for "fixed" servicing or "variable" servicing, I'm guessing that ZA is at area where all cars get set for "fixed" servicing.

Yes, that must be the explanation. Again, when your car is set on a fixed interval (15 000 km), the prescribed oil is 5w30 or 5w40. In case of a variable interval (30 000 km) it should be 0w20

If you study oils you will see that 5w40 is more protective for your engine then 5w30 and last 0w20. More info 5w40 change every 15.000 or one year
5w30 change every 30.000 or two years
0w20 change every 30.000 or two years
These all info i find the in the manual or in the the internet and its personal opinion. Is also important the temperature where you live.Image

Thank you giannis159, so all good my side then. Hey, I like to drive my car but fix it is a no no for me. The information provided can be a little vague at times because we all interpret things differently. Bottom line is I like to tow the line so if VW says blue is red then blue is red for me too :P

Still haven't heard from factory customer care yet (we also have a public holiday tomorrow) and assume they'll reply around Wednesday/Thursday.

at the end it states:
* 10,000 miles, or one year, of driving before an oil change is needed is applicable in North America

My guess is this was intended for the US market and may not apply to ours?

Yes, and in general, meaning only petrol engined models, remember that newer VW Group oil specs - or oils made to later VW Group oil specs, can always be used on cars where an earlier VW Group oil spec has been recommended - with the exception of 508, that oil is only suitable for use with certain engines.

I'd still have reservations about using a Castrol oil supplied in a green container, which in my world always means that it is a basic version of Magnatec, which is probably a good enough oil for use with older engines - maybe in this modern world more of a budget version of Castrol, than any oils they sell in gold coloured containers - once again, VW oil spec 502 goes back maybe 20 years and a lot has happened, or could have happened during that period in engine design and oil design. Though Castrol Magnatec oils are still being sold at least in UK but aimed at older cars and priced accordingly. There is a lot more to oils than just improving MPG, the change from 502 to 504 brought with it a vast quoted improvement in "engine wear" - and I like that aspect!

I'm not really worried what colour can my oil comes in, whether it's green, red blue or even pink, when I take my polo in for a service at a VW dealers workshop, they will replace your oil what ever they deem fit for the engine.
Now if you were taking it to a back street garage and they refilled with "Comma" oil, that's when you have to worry.
If you read that statement that Castrol were working with VW on the 508/509 oils especially for VW cars, I'm not really bothered if as some member has picked up 10,000 miles for VW cars in North America, a yearly oil change does not hurt, especially when you have a GTI, that can really stress any oil you put in. You didn't purchase a GTI to drive around as though your taking your Advanced driving test.
Oil is the life blood of your engine. Look after your oil and the oil will look after your engine !!!

Hello,
VW dealer comfirmed that my 2018 Polo GTI has 0w20 oil type. Not sure what brand, but they recommended 0w20 Castrol Edge IV LL full synthetic for toping up. I have now 19000km and added 250 ml.

Received this reply today from VW SA:

Volkswagen of South Africa (Pty) Ltd. does not prescribe one brand of oil
over another. We also do not specify different oil viscosity for different
temperatures.
We suggest that the oil complies with the specifications as outlined in the
owner’s manual and printed on the oil container:
Engine VW norm number
Petrol VW502.00
