just been reading too that there is 2 types of them sensors like mine, one is like mine which is black plastic one side and other side is clear, this was on my original rack, then there is a both black plastic sides one? which is for the twin vane racks? my old rack must have been a single vane, look like same connectors, if i fit the new angle sensor black both sides will i need a new pump to match or should it be ok?
ps come to think of it im sure i remember seeing 2 vanes on the shaft inside the sensor hole..

The TRW and KOYO racks have different types of rings for their different types of hall effect sensors so the rack and the sensor have to match. For the sensor matching the pump, I'm not sure but the pump does have its own control unit and if it's expecting a KOYO signal but gets a TRW or vice versa then I can't imagine it could interpret the signal as the 2 systems have different amounts of rotor magnets (the ring that spins with the steering column). That document says the KOYO has 60 capacitor electrodes on the ring whereas from the diagram it looks like the TRW system has 18 total as it shows half a disc with 9 shown.

As for which system the diagnostics reports back I imagine it would be the pump control module that reports that back so if you have a TRW pump but let's say a KOYO rack, the diagnostics will say its a TRW system as that is the controller module that the diagnostics will talk to.

As for identifying the rack the only way I can see how is by looking at the magnetic ring on the steering column and the sensor unless it's physically stamped on it somewhere like other parts of the car or maybe even a part number lookup if you can find one.

With identifying which type of TRW sensor to go for, I wouldn't know but VW have revised sensors and then tend to change the colour of the housing to differentiate them. For example, the coolant temperature sensors were black but due to issues they were revised and now have a grey housing.

cant see any numbers or make on rack might be under it which i cant get to unless i take it off. i took out the angle sensor and can confirm its got a single vane - the piece of metal that goes past the sensor when you turn the wheel, im still thinking it might need that double black both sides angle sensor?

when taking the sensor out from the rack i noticed that inside where the sensor goes have like scored out slots - like where the correct sensor should go.. then looking at thave above sensor with doulble black sides it has the grooves on it to fit in the rack, the left hand fits but you have to force it it, maybe thats the sensor for the rack then?

changed the sensor to the correct one with the wires built into the angle sonsor with a plug on the end and fitted and light has stayed off, this angle sensor fitted very well as it was shaped to fit, the other one fitted but had to be forced in, when i got the steering rack it didnt have the sensor in it, they gave me the wrong one, so returned back there and they gave me the correct one, with the usual excuses, the sensor they gave me was cheeper than the correct one with the lead on it.. wonder why they gave me it..

thanks mate, just glad ive sorted it for my daughter, thats the trouble when you buy second hand parts which are not fittet together when you buy them..
hopefully this thread will help someone else, p.s no light on today too... lol
