6c headlights onto 6r ?

you can just take off the whole assembly with the switch and the slip ring assembly. it has one black allen bolt on top, on the aluminium ring.
then undo the white/grey L shaped plug, and it will all come off in one go.

is the L-shaped plug your referring to the one that plugs into the stalks and sits just above the key barrel?

yes exactly. it is also this connector that is home to the grey wire you're after

how do i remove that white clip from the back of the stalk? is there clips that have to be undone?

Look for a square locking tab on top and pull it upward.

looks like you can just push it out now. it's one of the four vertical ones on the left.

will the the female connector have to be smaller to fit into the headlight switch?

No it needs a smaller terminal

the wire is far from the headlight switch, can i cut it and crimp a new piece of wire to reach the headlight switch? if so what is the wire i need? just 1.5mm grey wire or does it have a specific name

That's fine. Use copper wire if possible

i am going to purchase a new wire to go from the headlights switch to the relay, do i need to cut the current grey wire where it meets the relay (and crimp a new piece of wire which will go to the headlight switch) or remove it with the terminal still attached and replace with a new wire with terminals at each end. ciclo’s picture shows 000-979-021 wire but can i use this one? 000-979-133
