Door trim removal

Post by jammylammy »

Hi all,

Does anyone know if there's a better way to get the inside "foamy" trim off (once you've got the plastic door inside off, with the door handle, tray etc.) than my local VW dealer managed?

Here's how they got the drivers side liner off to replace the window winder mechanism and motor:

I don't see any other way of getting it over the white caps.

My passenger window's now knackered so I want to take a look but didn't want to wreck the liner.

And does anyone have any experience of fixing a window that refuses to go up or down? I know it might be something to do with a clip or bracket that may have snapped (due to door slammage!) but without taking a look I'm just guessing.

And of course I'm really reluctant to take it to a dealership and be fleeced unless absolutely necessary!

Thanks!

Hi mate.

Well the liner is stuck in with polyurethane sealant. As its stuck to painted glossy paint it has the tendancy to grip will to start with but when you really pull it, it comes off really cleany and 'together' if you know what i mean. You risk ripping the liner. What i suggest you do it getting a craft/standly knife with a long blade, slip the knife between the foam and the door and 'sawing ' the sealant pulling the foam off as you go. Its a slow process but if you careful its the best way, just be careful you dont 'saw' the paint off the door. Its only primer and abit of paint but just be careful, and maybe touch up if you do. Then you can peel the old sealant off the door, dont try on the foam it will rip, or leave it on and just 'push' it back down. Sticks well even the the old stuff

The white slot clips are (i think i can remeber) just clipped in and also stuck with the poly s**t. Get a pair of sissors opened up and pinch the sides behind the clip and pull forwards. They come out with a bit of a fight

Then buy some black polyurethan adhesive and stick it back down when ya finished.

Job done.
