Polo GTi Dyno Results

Post by Josh_PoloGTi »

Hi All

Just got back from my session at the Rolling Road at John Noble Motorsport in Chesterfield.

Results:

128.1bhp @ 6401rpm (103mph)
110.7 lbft @ 5641rpm

I'd be interested to hear from any other Polo GTi owners who have had their car on the rollers.

Yeah :?:  :?:

It is... I've emailed the manufacturer to see what is going on.

However, the Rolling Road guy said that there could be an extra 10bhp lurking lower down the rev range... Didn't really understand.

Just not at max power. Ie at say 4000 revs, it might be 10bhp more than normal... If you look at the graph, where the torque dips, the bhp might normally dip as well??

I don't know!

Anyway, if you've still got your graph, please scan it and put it on the forum... I'll host the picture if you need me to.

well josh like i said you should be happy with a power curve as flat as that (torque too) and i think i know what youre trying to sa in the last post:
the power box may have given you 13hp in another part of the rev range
i.e. 2500rpm which could be why the power curve is so flat
also the powerbox will prolly be programed to fully optimise the engine with other mods i.e. filter and exaust.when i fitted mine i already had my exaust and k&n fitted so i cant tell you which way is etter until i get on the dyno but i might try and book a sesion some time this week if i have time
all in all though you should be happy with that because i bet the car is 100x more fun to drive / 100% more driveable than before which means you CAN drive normally more easilly (note i said CAN because ive forgotten what normal driving is :P )

i just had a quick search for you on google and found this here http://www.tiscali.co.uk/motoring/roadt ... 271_1.html

and it says:
Volkswagen has promised a hot Polo for years, but it took the range-wide facelift last February to make it a reality. The revised range's stiffer structure, improved ride and handling and Lupo-style, tech-look cabin make a good base for a rapid Polo, and power - 125 bhp of it - comes from an iron-block, 1.6-litre version of the 1.4 16V engine used in some other Polos. Some discreet bodykit, BBS 15 in wheels with 195/45 tyres, a honeycomb front grille and xenon gas-discharge headlights set a sporty tone. Unlike the larger, more subtle Golf GTI, this is an old-school, upfront hot hatchback.
and this too:
With 125 bhp on offer, plus 112 lb ft of torque on tap at a low 3300 rpm thanks to variable inlet-valve timing, the Polo can reach 127 mph and touch 62 mph from a standstill in 8.7 seconds. The 16-valve engine sounds sportily rorty without being loud, and its drive-by-wire accelerator responds keenly. Somehow, though, the Polo doesn't feel quite as lively as the figures suggest, and you're aware of its considerable weight compared with, say, a Citroen Saxo VTS or a Peugeot 106 GTI.
so we can now look at where the extra power comes in as there is 112lb ft on tap at 3300 so you can see that nopw you have 110.7lbft at 5641rpm, thus the torque has been raised by 2300 to make the car feel much more powerful at spirited driving ranges.
and like i said 3.1hp dosent sound like much but with a power curve like that id be buzzing

just found this on the site too http://download.tiscali.co.uk/dyn/details.jsp?id=215504
might help some of us in photo shop

couldnt find anywhere to scan it in but ive looked at it.
heres the info:
126bhp @ 6396rpm
108lbft @2850rpm
had a blowing exhaust and no decent cold air feed to induction kit that day. I reckon now it be about 127 with all sorted.

Hi

Right then

Yes, the dyno is reliable (apparently one of the most reliable in the country!)

Yes the manufacturer got back to me

I have 10 lbft of torque more than another Polo GTi on the forum (mentioning no names)...

So, I think the box is doing what it's meant to...

I contacted the dyno place and they said that what they do is do the run (which gives bhp at flywheel and torque) then take the foot off the gas and let it come to a stop naturally. This lets them measure the resistance (or something) so this gives them the bhp at the wheels figure... I don't understand.

Anyway, I'm about to start another post, cos my gearbox is shagged and the dealers told me this morning they are going to replace it.

I assume that because the gearbox is shagged, it will be causing more resistance between the flywheel and the wheels...

I have noticed that when I let off the gas, the car seems to be "engine braking" a lot more than it used to (ie it doesn't just coast along)

Hope this helps!

the wheel power is usually the one that is measured and then crank hp is calculated from it by using the generally accepted 12% power loss caused by the transmition (fwd) and from what josh told me id say that dyno is faitly reliable
however you must remember that even though the dyno might be very stable on readouts there are other factors which may affect the reading such as;
air pressure
air temp
station altitude
humidity
tyre size
geometry
internal temps and tolerences
even down to draging brakes or a dodgy bearing
things like oil weight (20w50 compared to 0w30) can cause some diferences because of the drag created on the oil pump
so the only real way to get a 100% accurate reading would be for every dyno to use a set weight of oil in the engne and remove the engine to do a full bench test which im sure youll understand would be a little bit of hastle for joe bloggs

Mine came out on the rollers at 116bhp at the wheels and roughly translates to 130 at the fly. That was on a completely standard engine.
This was at the Club Polo RR day. It seemed induction kits actually reduced power in some cases.
