Not I -- otherwise bad things will happen... for my bank balance! I swear, the ONLY thing stopping me legging it down my local dealer and ordering one is the running costs (petrol and insurance)... commuting sucks, as does being young.

oh yeah, I'm test driving it again this weekend.

man... if I could get a gti Â£3k under the list price with xenons and next week I would do it. Part ex-ing the CTR.

I know you can get them 3k under list price but would have to wait till like the end of the year.

Revo are working on a chip "This is currently under development.....gains will be significant" 30+ bhp anyone?? maybe more. And apparently there is already a superchip, or is it another one?

Why couldn't they make it that bit more powerful, just a bit lighter, just a bit faster than the CTR. And they looks nasty in blue.

Insurance is cheaper than the CTR and I bet the gti beats the mpg being FSI

When I put in my form for the track day event I got handed some GTI brochures

The FSI technology means that figures are pretty good IMO:

Urban 25.4
Extra-urban 44.8
Combined 34.9

These are figures for the manual option. The DSG, when it becomes available, gives you a couple more mpg in urban conditions.

Insurance is cheaper than the CTR

never knew that...

Oh and finally, as for a lighter GTI, there's supposedly a Golf GTI 'Lite' in development for later this year/early 06. There was an article in a past Auto Express, I'll dig it out and take a look

EDIT: forgot to mention that the economy figures quoted where recorded on lowly 95 RON unleaded...

Yeah, same insurance group but for some reason directline would give me money back for swapping? Maybe not many people have written off a gti yet...? i dunno how it works.

Combined (mpg) 31.7

So yeah, about whatI thought, I usually get around 36
mpg. unless my maths is wrong.

I'd love to see a GTI on 18" RX2's or CH. Though, still getting used to the wheels, looks a bit 80's escort.

It sounds very good for a car of it's performance, oh and the performance is spot on, and thankfully doesn't require a heavy foot to get the most out of (unlike the CTR, which just doesn't seem at all interested unless you introduce it to the redline, IMO

).

Apparently there's a diesel version of the GTI planned for the future, but with only ~160bhp (last I heard), I'd think they'd be better off not "diluting" the GTI badge again, and just keep with the semi-hot GT TDI branding for it.

According to the aforementioned Auto Express, when they first got their mitts on a LHD GTI for their first group test:

VW has finally cottoned on to the Golf's weight problem, so - as Auto Express revealed in Issue 825 - there will be a GTI 'Light'. Using an uprated 230bhp engine, it wil be stripped of unnecessary weight (you will even have to wind the windows), and will be a driver's car in the spirit of the Mk1. If you needthe luxuries, there will be an R32 replacement, set to be called the R34 and powered by the Audi A3's 225bhp 3.2-litre V6.

BTW I agree with you Petrified, nice large wide BBS rims would look the nuts on the new GTI

Economy sounds bobbins for a 2005 car, the g40 could wizz all over that couldn't it? and thats a 12+ year old design with very little advanced jiggery pokery...

I'd be expecting 10mpg on that... FSi, vvt (? havent we got that in european cars yet for heavens sake?)..... oh and hybridise or at least incorporate formule-E style automatic start/stop on the sucker...

meh.

Yeah, it was a bit of a blow going from the 48mpg polo fsi to 30-36mpg.

The first tank in the G40 lasted around 300 miles, my second tank lasted around 150 so i guess when you push it, it can be a lot worse.

Where as the CTR tanks are around 300-380 miles on a 50+ litre tank.

VW are up their own **** and the customer service put me off for life.

I've never been in a modern Vauxhall that had a problem, and the dealers are okay.
