Help?

Post by polofamily »

Hi All
We are new members... hello!
My husband drives an '02 Polo TDi Sport in black. A great car we have had from new. Low miles, totally reliable and great on fuel.

My son is 17yrs in May and we were going to give him that car and so we bought my parents Volvo estate from them (my Dad died so it helped Mum out too). Anyway we put the car details in some comparison sites for insurance (had to use a false DoB as you can only get quotes a month before the birthday!) and it came out at £6,500!!!!!!!!! Double what the car value is...

So we had a re-think and my son has been looking at all manner of small hatches for months. He has set his heart on... wait for it... a POLO Gti from around year 2000. Give me strength, he likes Polos too!

So my questions are:
* Has anyone any idea how the GTi from roughly that year compares to the TDi Sport on insurance?
* Has anyone paid for a son to have Gti insurance (not on parent's policy) and what was cost?
* Has anyone set up a family multi car policy and found this better on £ compared to 3 separate policies that we will need?
(Does anyone know someone who is looking for a Volvo V70, '51 plate, Silver, approx 80k miles, vgc and my Dad is the only owner before us? It might help us pay for the GTi insurance now and as my hubby now wants to keep his TDi...)

Here's hoping and thanks!
KR

Hi Jules,

Your going to be getting very high quotes for someone so young and with little driving experience, with the GTi being insurance group 12 its not really going to be very insurance friendly. Try Admiral, Elephant or Bell, they do good quotes but don't expect anything amazing. I can imagine a TDI Sport (is this a GT?) having a very similar group, and potentially similar output.

I paid £800 for my 6N Polo (1997) which was a 1.4, and even that was on my parents policy. I wouldn't recommend this either, as not only does this class as fronting which is illegal, it doesn't do you any favours when he wants another car - which is the situation i'm in now  Never tried a multicar policy, but might be worth a go with admiral? If you're looking for a first car, you can't go wrong with a 6N or 6N2 1.4 or 1.0, they aren't the fastest things on the road, but you don't want that at that age, everyone starts low engine then builds up. Plus you can always look into GTi come 18 or 19 (I think people are paying £1800ish for a 6n2 GTi at 18).

Hello, i would say you'd struggle to get insurance for him on a 1.6 at 17. My friend has a 1.1 saxo cost him £650 to buy but £1900 to insure!

Best idea's would be either:

Get a 1.0 polo from the same year and put a few gti bits on it

or

wait a couple years until he has a couple years no claims and then look into it.

To put it simple giving a young lad of 17 a car with 125bhp is not a wise idea.
Everyone goes a little crazy when they first pass their test and I don’t think it would be a good choice having a performance car to begin with.

As Godderz23 suggested buy your son a 1.0 or 1.4 8V Polo to begin with and let him get a couple of years driving experience under his belt before moving on to a quicker/higher performance car. Young lads have a tendency to think their Lewis Hamilton when they first pass their test so it’s best to have something sluggish and slow to begin with.

We all only begin to learn how to drive when you have actually passed your test and driving a GTI at 17 would be crazy.

My boyfriend used to own my GTI
He brought it when he was 18 and had to leave it on his drive for 6 months, until his 19th birthday until anyone would insure him!
Plus I managed to scare myself silly before he started driving it, because everyone around us kept going "he'll kill himself in that car" - and he's attually a brilliant driver, so I would be worried about a new driver.

It's good he's into good old polos tho ;)

Hi Jules,

I started off with a 1.0 8v 50hp W reg Polo 6N2 which was a lovely little car. I had it for a year and a half until my 19th Birthday. The first years insurance on my own policy was for £1200 odd. Then around about my 19th Birthday I upgraded to a GTI 6N2. The insurance on this at the moment with 1 and a bit no claims bonus is still £1400. It was a big step at first going from 50hp to 125hp. I still have the 1.0 and my father uses it as a run around instead of his A4. I will be 20 next month so we will see how much they robb me for this renewal

Yeah, the insurance quote will be higher for the Gti than the TDi Sport XD

Best thing in my opinion is to get a classic car as your first car because then the insurance is SO MUCH lower, I paid £1200 for my VW Beetle insurance with a million mods on it and you can get it for under £1000 if you joing a club aswell.

After he has had one years expeience then let him have the Gti. Im 18 with 1 years NCB and with 3 points on my lisence :( and the insurance for my Gti is £2000, it would have been £1700 if i didnt have any points...
Im with Admeral :) they are really good!
Hope this helps :)

I have a 1.0 50bhp 6N2, and i think its a fantastic car. The insurance isnt to bad, and if your son wants to make it look like a GTI then its possible. Mines a GTI look alike and i love it to pieces!

I would definitely say Admiral are competitive for younger drivers for sure. I renewed yesterday, 19, 1 ncb, 1 accident, 1 year 11 months exp for £916 fully comp with 500 excess... if i waited a month for 2 years exp it would have been £830!
