Can't get rear fog-light to work on my 6R Blue GT after upgrading the BCM

Post by Aquavalver »

So last year I fitted some LED rear lights, that were meant to have been UK insurance approved. Anyway, a few days later I realised that I had no reverse light or fog light. I took the lights off and then realised that the pins on the RHS rear light matched the plug on the end of the LHS loom and vice-versa! So then I obviously realised that the lights for actually for LHD cars! Anyway, I got a friend of mine (who lives up the other end of the country) to make an adapter loom for me and then everything worked fine apart from the can bus warning light on the clocks.

Back in early March I found a retro-fitter/coder and he fitted my 6C carbon fibre steering wheel and of course I needed to change the BCM for the steering wheel buttons to illuminate. The BCM was a 7E0 that I bought from Ciclo back at the end of 2019! Everything worked fine apart from the rear fog light. The guy that fitted them wasn't able to get it working and it was dark and late by then. He said he'd look for the wiring diagram to see if he could sort it. Anyway, he found the diagram and said that on the old BCM, it was pin 6 for the rear fog light and on the new BCM it was pin 65, on plug A. He was very busy for while and it wasn't too important at the time needed the rear fog light working, but as my MOT is due in a week, I contacted him and went to see him this morning to get it sorted. However when pin 65 was used, the rear fog light was on permanently and the sun-visor vanity mirror lights did not work and he was not able to sort the problem. I include the wiring diagram and the scan he did.

I have an aftermarket Alpine Apple car play headhunit -iLX-705D which is why some of the radio faults are showing.

Can anyone help with the fog light problem and also what do I need to remove the canbus warning light because if have LED rear lights?

Are all errors caused by LED lights in the brakes, fogs and DRLs?

Before the BCM change, they worked fine apart from the canbus warning light. I don't have DRL's now as have a WRC front bumper. This is how the rear lights are:

Hi Aquavalver,

1- Faults in front fog lights (Adaptive Lights) and DRLs.
Well, if you no longer have front fog lights and DRLs...
New BCM coding: (test 1)
25B4293F08E12400B32809302C2B0ED01FC0412E600000002000202A0000

2- Rear fog light, etc.
The original factory wires for the rear fog light on your BlueGT with factory BCM Max is correct for any type of BCM Max, 7H0 or new 7E0.
T73a/6 is the Rear fog light output signal in models with start/stop system or factory bi-xenon headlights.
T73a/65 is the Supply (30G) output signal for interior light and luggage compartment light... as your friend was able to verify.πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ... :)

We will try to code your aftermarket LED taillights into the new BCM once we fix the bugs in the front fog lights and DRLs.
Do you know if this type of LED taillight is based solely and exclusively on LEDs or is it possible that it includes resistors internally to avoid failures/faults?

---
All these types of aftermarket LED taillights 'for the 6R' were always a disaster in every way. Approvals (legality), most are poorly manufactured, etc...
I recommend installing the original 6C taillights.

Thank you Fernando!

The reason why I liked this design of LED rear light is because for 1., most people when changing the rear lights choose these V-Land (Audi A1?) style ones which I'm not so keen on, 2. They kinda match the factory Bi-Xenons in their style (which I still have to fit at some point) and 3. Not many people seem to have them and I like to try and be a little different!

They are all LED and there does seem to be a resistor, if you notice in this photo.

Only slight problem is that the retro-fitting/coding guy is about 1 1/2 -2 hour drive away each way, so it's a bit of a trek and fair bit of fuel to keep going to him.

By the way, the wiring diagram you posted is for the Polo 6C...

Here you find any diagram you may need for 6R, etc. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

Timothy, I completely understand what you are saying and your ideas are good, but the problem of not having a diagnostic/coding tool is a great challenge to solve these issues. There is no point in taking such long drives and wasting gas money to try BCM codings that I give you that might not end up working or fixing this issue.

This model of LED taillights do not usually give problems in older BCMs and lower than the BCM Max, due to the simple fact that in 6R with those lower BCMs there is no diagnostic for some lights because they work without the BCM management.
The 6R BlueGT was born with 7H0 BCM Max and many lights are managed by the BCM.

With the new 7E0 BCM Max models the matter is more complicated/complex since they are parameterized to be able to manage all the lights.

In 2019 you should have bought the original VCDS...😊 (you would have already amply gotten the necessary performance and it would be fully amortized).

At the moment I can only tell you to buy a diagnostic tool, even if it is one of those cheap ones that are sold on Ali, even if you only use it for this matter, it is cheaper than any other circumstance.
It will even be absolutely necessary if you plan to install Bi-xenon headlights, in which case you should seriously consider installing the original 6C taillights to get everything working properly.

Timothy, I would have liked to live near you so that I could solve all this for you in a jiffy.
(if possible, reinstall the original taillights or the 7H0 BCM to go to MOT)

The other problem is, is that I don't have a laptop or the money for one :(

I understand your difficult situation, you will have to have some patience to try to save some money to start this good project again. It doesn't matter how long it takes as long as you keep the illusion alive and desire to do it.
It is likely that at some point in the future you will have a little more luck in economic matters. πŸ‘

I hope so, but some experts only seem to see it getting worse, at this rate I'll end up homeless!

So I re-fitted the original rear lights tonight, but still no rear fog light working. Also strangely the canbus warning light is still on!

The canbus warning light is due to incorrect coding for the current installed equipment.
- Due to installing the WRC bumper and removing the fog lights and DRL... and then not coding the BCM.
- Also possible due to the new wiring your friend did for the aftermarket LED taillights... as I understood these aftermarked LED taillights are for LHD and your BlueGT is RHD.πŸ€¦β€β™‚οΈ

The rear fog light does not work with the original taillights because you have it coded as if it were an LED version (Byte27), the rest of Bytes for rear fog light is correct!
It may also cause the canbus warning light.

It is necessary to return to the original wiring installation!!!
A new BCM coding is also essential!!!

Thank you. The canbus warning light didn't come on after the WRC front bumper was fitted, but when the led lights were fitted. When I re-fitted the original rear lights, I also removed the adapter looms, so it was as it used to be apart from the BCM.

Yes, I understood all thatπŸ‘, although pin T73a/6 was touched during this process to feed its wire erroneously/mistakenly from T73a/65, with the possibility that it was not installed correctly later.
We need a diagnostic tool to rule out possible causes of failure and 'investigate' why the rear fog light now doesn't work with the original taillights.

Notes:
- The canbus warning light could appear when you requested (intentionally or not) from the light switch the front fog lights function or the BCM managed the static cornering lights function without having the front fog lights installed, which does not necessarily have to match with the bumper installation.
Your BCM was not coded correctly after the WRC bumper installation, and I can assure you that due to these conditions the diagnosis explodes (warning light + detected faults).

- Fault overlap is possible.

---

It is a contradiction that the MFD (from factory in the 6R BlueGT) does not report the exact failure of some lights when the canbus warning light comes on πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ... well, the 6R has several contradictions, even in the wiring diagrams (erWin) some diagrams are missing (a bit enigmatic 🀭).

e.g. Full wiring installation for Polo 6R "7L3" (without start/stop system) with factory bi-xenon. :?: πŸ˜‹

Sometimes we forget the simplest things, for example, until the diagnosed fault (DTC) is cleared with the diagnostic tool the light that caused the fault will not work.

Hi! So went back to the retro fitting/coding guy as needed to pass the MOT so can drive legally. Tried the new coding for the removed front fog lights/DRL, but the rear fog light still did not work. Re-fitted the old BCM so could pass the MOT (of course the MFSW button lighting will not work now) and straight away the rear foglight worked again. Here are the various 3 scans:
