ITB's would be nice but I have heard they are quite difficult to get right on the GTI engine., there is a good thread of Club Lupo about ITB's.
Most people tend to use them on the 1.4 16V Lupo's & Polo's and get decent performance figures.

Getting the fueling right is the biggest problem but i'm sure it can be done :)

Don't think anyone's got them working on the standard ECU have they?

I've been properly looking into this, and I reckon the hardest bits would be to convert the throttle to cable and not electric, and to get a feed to the brake vacuum system. Fitting should be quite simple to do at home, but the wiring to a new ECU might be a bit tricky, but once that's done then it's just a remap on the standalone ECU.

If you can use your own injectors then it would be cheaper than that I'd guess.

Although I wonder if one of those would be better, to keep the alarm, SRS etc working as it should do. . .

Makes it sound sooo simple!

Yeah you will need an aftermarket ECU to fit ITB's which will cost a fortune, plus you have the ITB prices and all the mapping costs.

It would be cheaper to get a set of 256 Schrick Cams fitted and performance figures probably would be the same.
Free flowing stainless exhaust, De-Cat, 4-2-1 (4-1 would be better) Exhaust Manifold, Induction kit, Race 256 Cams & Re-map would see 155-160bhp easy!

150bhp is achieveable without cams so 160+ is certainly something that could be done with the right custom mapping.
ITB's would be a waste of time on the GTI engine if i'm honest and end up costing far more than car is actually worth.
Not trying to knock the idea but I just think it would cost far too much, then you have the gearbox to think of and we all know how fragile they are.

Here's video of some nob on youtube with Jenvey ITB's on his Lupo GTI - cost him a fortune

A cheaper alternative though is bike carbs.

Basically ITBs, but without the management. All you'd need to do (I think) is make the throttle cable, fit the carbs, get a distributor set up off an older Polo or Golf or something, and tune the carbs.

Not going to be as good, but I'm seriously considering it for the cheapness over ITBs, and it being easier/cheaper to add further upgrades as you won't need a full on remap after adding cams etc, just tweak the fueling/timing a bit.

Not too sure where you'd stand regarding the fuel pump, and the immobiliser though - although I guess the latter isn't an issue as the injectors aren't doing anything, or as long as there's power to the coils, it should run.

I'd imagine all that you can do for a few hundred ££, which is seriously tempting considering I just found out I still get student finance grants on a placement year! :D

*I may have some of that slightly wrong, but I think it's mostly correct.

Nah you're mostly right. You get the fuelling set-up from a mk2 polo I believe, dizzy and everything. Its been covered a few times over at club-polo. It is tempting, especially when coupled with a good cam. At the moment, I've just ordered me a MIL eliminator to get rid of that pesky check engine light, and stop the engine from running rich due to the presence of the decat. Next up, its coilies. I'm swaying towards them lovely kW v1s, but everywhere is selling them for north of £600.

You will need a full custom re-map if you fit 256 cams mate :)
Those babies are lumpy as lumpy gets, JBS auto designs will sort you out if you go down that route

Im sorry for sounding old, but what exactly do you mean by lumpy? :P I'm planning on getting a re-map anyway to tie all the mods that have been made.

Bad idleing and not as smooth at lower revs I believe. https://www.youtube*.com/results?search_q ... +idle&aq=f

Kinda like a misfire.

Can you remap these? I thought the actual chip had to be removed?

Custom map is the best route to get the best set up & figures

Looking forward to seeing the results of Craigs GTI next week :)
