what is your TP_B value on your 2018-22 1.0 TS1

Post by grazuncle2 »

Hi all

I would have posted this in my current ongoing thread but would not expect anyone to read it there: viewtopic.php?t=78313

Could anyone let me know what the OBD value you have for Throttle Position (TP_B) at idle or just standing with ignition on via your scanner please. I can't find a specific reference to it on a search.. general values are said to be anywhere between 0 and 20 but that is dependent on the car/make. I can't find a specific reference/value to a Polo AW

Mine is 14.1% I have no idea if this is normal or high and if it may explain my, at working temperature, high Idle speed of 1,200 rpm

Any help appreciated

Update:

I decided to look at the pedal this morning to see if anything had gotten in the way of the throttle. Found nothing but realised there is no cable. only a sensor attached to it.. reconnected the OBD scanner and did a live test.. wow couldn't believe it... The TP percentage starts high 17% and goes down slightly with depression before going up as expected... same when releasing. it goes down to 11% just prior to foot off and the percentage jumps to 17.6% again!

I posted a YT video of this live here.

I'll take it for a spin i bt and see if I can get the rpm to reflect this finding.

After a run i found i can't operate the throttle light enough to drop the revs down.. though the rec counter does blip when pressed.

I misread the idling revs too.. the divisions on the dial are divided by 5 sections not 10. I'm in the second division which makes the idling revs not 1200 but 1400!

I'd still be interested in what other owner's throttle position reads on their scanner.

That could explain your idle Rev being high, as it looks like your car thinks the pedal is depressed 17% all the time when you foot isn’t on the pedal. The fact that it drops to 11% when you touch it indicates to me the sensor is bad. I will do a scan on mine tonight and post the result of what mine is saying.

Thanks for replying 8)

I'd appreciate any feedback or data.

It all helps when presenting the car to the garage.
I actually considered buying a replacement sensor and fitting one myself but research seems to indicate it would need coding in.

My OBD scanner system doesn't do anything like near that capability

Thanks again

As you can see this is with my engine at just under 1000 revs, looks like 950 is my usual RPM and the results are with my foot of the pedal just idling with a warm engine.

Thanks for taking the trouble to do this test and posting the results..

there is a lot more information in your example!

regarding the position percentage values of your car @ 950 rpm.. I'm not convinced that my similar percentage readings.. around the same on most of yours.. are indicating a throttle position problem now. I otherwise would have expected yours would be high revving at idle too.

I don't know enough to say anything else... I can only say to the garage service dept (when i get it to them in two weeks time :( ) that the figures fluctuate a little lower when touching the throttle. other than that I'm at their mercy, or lack of it.

anyone else have input or experience of this issue?

There is one thing I notice on your reading, the TAC measurement unit is at 4.7, and on mine the same looks to be around 2 at idle, and when I revved mine to around 1.5k revs, my Throttle Valve Positon moved up to 4.5% and this number is similar to your TAC measurement unit, and your revs are around the same as what mine were when my reading was at 4.5 ish. This tells me that your throttle valve position is around 4.7 at idle when it should be around 2. This is the only correlation I can see. I don't mind helping with this sort of stuff as I am a into technology and this interests me :D

Thanks for that observation!

it is interesting that yours comes to same reading when revved up.

very useful.. many thanks.. think I'm moving away from pedal sensor to engine parts (or at least air intake position)

Grateful.

I just took a reading including my Rev counter so you can see my usual idle and when revving to 1.5k

thanks again..

can't beat real data.

As I have mentioned earlier in the post the local VW garage couldn't book me in till 21st April, so will have to wait another two weeks at least to find out what they make of it all. :(
